Frequently Asked Questions
-
Clinical Hypnotherapy for women’s health uses hypnosis within a therapeutic context to support the emotional, psychological and behavioural experiences that can accompany women’s health concerns.
In my practice, this may include support around persistent pain, endometriosis, PMDD, fertility and IVF, intimacy, body image, anxiety, trauma-related patterns and the emotional impact of living with a chronic health condition.
It is designed to complement — not replace — appropriate medical, psychological or allied-health care.
-
Women seek Clinical Hypnotherapy for many different reasons, including the emotional impact of endometriosis, pelvic and persistent pain, PMDD, fertility treatment, intimacy concerns, body-image difficulties, anxiety, chronic stress and trauma-related patterns.
The purpose is not to claim that these conditions are “all in your head” or caused by unresolved emotions.
Instead, we work with the psychological and emotional experiences surrounding them: fear, stress, hypervigilance, shame, body disconnection, coping patterns and your relationship with yourself.
-
Hypnotherapy may be a useful complementary approach for some people living with persistent pain, although the evidence varies by condition and more research is still needed specifically for endometriosis and pelvic pain.
Australian researchers at Deakin University are currently studying hypnotherapy for chronic pelvic pain, including endometriosis, IBS and painful bladder syndrome, which shows that this is an active and developing area of research.
In my practice, the focus is on supporting the emotional and psychological experience of persistent pain alongside appropriate medical care — not treating the underlying disease itself.
-
Hypnotherapy is not a treatment for the hormonal causes of PMDD, but it may be used to support some of the emotional experiences that can accompany it, such as anxiety, stress, emotional overwhelm and difficulty coping with recurring symptoms.
PMDD can have a significant impact on mood, relationships, work and quality of life, so appropriate medical assessment is important.
My role is complementary: helping you explore emotional patterns, stress responses and coping while you continue working with your GP, gynaecologist, psychiatrist or other relevant healthcare professionals where needed.
-
There is some evidence that hypnotherapy may help with aspects of menopause, particularly the impact of hot flushes and sleep disturbance, although the evidence base remains limited.
Healthdirect Australia currently lists hypnotherapy as one complementary option that may improve sleep and the impact of hot flushes while noting that evidence is still limited.
Hypnotherapy may also provide space to work with anxiety, emotional changes, identity shifts and the psychological experience of this life stage.
-
Hypnotherapy can be used to support the emotional experience of trying to conceive or undergoing fertility treatment, including stress, fear, grief, uncertainty, body disconnection and treatment-related anxiety.
I would not tell a client that hypnotherapy will increase fertility or guarantee IVF success. Evidence around psychological interventions and reproductive outcomes remains mixed and varies significantly by intervention and study quality.
My focus is helping you feel more supported through the fertility journey while your reproductive healthcare remains in the hands of your fertility team.
-
Hypnosis has been studied for anxiety, and evidence suggests it may be useful for some anxiety-related concerns, particularly when integrated with established therapeutic approaches.
In sessions, we may explore the thoughts, expectations, emotional associations and automatic responses that keep anxiety repeating.
Rather than simply telling yourself to “calm down,” the work is about creating opportunities to experience yourself differently when the familiar pattern begins.
-
Hypnotherapy may be used as part of trauma-informed therapeutic work for some people, but suitability depends on the individual, the nature of the trauma and the level of psychological support required.
I do not assume that you need to repeatedly relive or disclose every detail of a traumatic experience.
My work focuses on the beliefs, emotional responses and protective patterns surrounding what happened, and I refer or encourage specialist psychological or psychiatric care when that is the more appropriate level of support.
-
For some women, difficult experiences can change the way closeness, touch, sex or simply being present in the body feels.
Clinical Hypnotherapy may provide a gentle way to explore shame, fear, avoidance, body disconnection and learned emotional responses around intimacy.
The goal is not to pressure you into becoming more sexual.
It is to support a greater sense of choice, safety and connection with yourself.
-
Yes, but the strength of evidence depends on what hypnotherapy is being used for.
Research supports hypnosis in several clinical contexts, including some pain applications, procedural anxiety and gut-directed hypnotherapy for IBS, while evidence for other conditions remains emerging or mixed. A 2024 review specifically noted that evidence-based uses of hypnosis should be distinguished from outdated or pseudoscientific claims.
That is why I practise from an evidence-informed, complementary perspective rather than presenting hypnotherapy as a cure-all.
-
My sessions begin with conversation.
We explore what you are experiencing, the patterns you have noticed, what you would like to change and what may be sitting underneath the presenting concern.
When appropriate, we then move into hypnosis, which may involve focused attention, therapeutic imagery, suggestion, metaphor or rehearsal of different emotional and behavioural responses.
You remain aware and able to communicate throughout the session.
-
No.
Clinical hypnosis is not stage hypnosis. You remain aware, can communicate and retain the ability to make choices throughout the session.
People experience hypnosis differently: some feel deeply relaxed, while others simply notice greater focus or absorption. There is no requirement to feel unconscious or “out of it” for hypnosis to occur. This is also one of the most consistently searched questions across Australian hypnotherapy FAQ pages.
-
There is no single correct feeling.
Some people feel deeply relaxed. Others feel calm but alert, absorbed in imagery or more internally focused. Some notice very little dramatic change at all.
You do not need to “feel hypnotised” for the session to be useful.
The most important thing is that you feel safe enough to engage with the process.
-
There is no universal number because it depends on what you want support with, how long the pattern has been present, its complexity and how you respond to the work.
Rather than promising a fixed number before meeting you, I prefer to discuss what is appropriate once I understand your situation.
Some concerns may require relatively brief work, while long-standing emotional or health-related patterns may benefit from a more structured process.
-
Yes.
Clinical Hypnotherapy can be used alongside medical, psychological, physiotherapy, pelvic-health or fertility care where appropriate.
I do not ask clients to stop prescribed medication or replace recommended healthcare with hypnotherapy.
For women's health concerns especially, I believe the most responsible approach is often collaborative and complementary rather than either/or.
-
A referral is not required to book Clinical Hypnotherapy.
However, if you are experiencing physical symptoms, significant mental-health symptoms or a condition requiring specialist care, I may recommend that you consult or continue working with an appropriate healthcare professional alongside our work.
